Oh yum...

UCK! But I don't know how true this is: “Parents wouldn’t eat with a dirty fork, but they often think nothing of picking a pacifier up off the floor at a mall and popping it back in their baby’s mouth,” We may get casual (lazy) at home, but I think a mall floor is pushing it!

Sugar-coated Binky

Little Guy is a thumb sucker and declared a month ago that he was going to stop when he was 4 (yesterday). Not surprisingly, he didn't. We were talking about it last night and mentioned that B had been a binky baby, but we got rid of that when he turned 2.
That conversation went like this:

B: What did you do with my binky?
Me (trying to be sensitive and gentle): Hmm, I think we sent it to a teeny baby who needed one.
B (drawn back with a disgusted face): After it was in my mouth?! Why didn't you just throw it in the trash?

HA! Guess I don't need to sugar coat things for my big bad 5-yr-old now!

Binky Baby? Thumb Sucker?

It drives me CRAZY to see kids walking around with binkies in their mouths, yet I still think it's cute when my 3-yr-old sucks his thumb. Is there a difference?

I'm not too much of a hypocrite...my older son was a binky baby! We kept it in his crib at 1-yr, and got rid of it altogether at 2-yrs.

My first son was a Binky Baby. He loved his binky so. He occasionally tells me, "When I was a tiny baby, I had a binky." It kinda breaks my heart that he remembers, but yes, had a binky.

At his first birthday, it was restricted to the crib (or sleeping situations). Shortly after his second birthday we ditched it altogether. No tricks or trades, just cold turkey. (He didn't actually eat cold turkey, we just used that method.) It was much less painful for both of us than I'd expected. Then my second little bundle of blue came along and was pretty much born with his thumb in his mouth (which, let me tell you, can complicate delivery). His first birthday came and went with no restrictions and, with his second birthday right around the corner, I see no way to restrict! After all, it's a part of his hand. The very hands that we encourage him to use.

So what now? As with everything, there are conflicting views out there: leave him alone (see palate expander issue below), enourage other activity/keep him distracted, use old fashioned bad-tasting lotions, don't use old fashioned bad-tasting lotions...parenting is so confusing.

Any good ideas out there? Just to complicate things further, I'll reveal that he does not have a preference-- he'll take whichever thumb is most easily accessible. And yes, we see it more when he's tired, bored, hurt, or scared, but it's not limited to those times.

Ugh, if only we could let our children be...well, they'd probably need rootcanal, palate expanders, therapy, and a good hazmat-level scrub. But they'd probably need those anyway!
