Here's another one:
A few weeks ago, I was in line at a large superstore. The girl in from of me had a baby (< 1yr) in the front of the cart and a slightly older child (2?) in the back. She was yelling for an out-of-sight third child to come back for a couple minutes before she asked me to watch her cart (including the kids) while she rounded up her other child. Empathizing, I agreed thinking it'd only be a moment-- who would leave their kids?
If it makes a difference (which I think it does) I did not have my own kids with me so she didn't know if I was a mom or not (I tend to think that being a mom gives *some degree* of credibility).
Anyway, she didn't come back for over 5 minutes-- which, despite feeling like 15 minutes as I allowed shopper after shopper to go in front of me in line, is WAY too long to leave your kids with a stranger, right?! I easily could have wheeled those kids out, thrown them in a car, and been a mile in any direction with them-- all while this girl tracked down her 3-yr-old!
I get that it's hard to manage 3 kids in a store, but I was a little shocked at her ease. Did she just trust that I was a good person, or act unforgivably irresponsible?
