In so many families this is true. What can I make you? Are you hungry? What else can I get you? Eat up! I have plenty more. By providing food, we are providing life.
For many of us moms, this begins at the birth of our children (before birth, by feeding ourselves healthful foods, really). Breastfeeding, like so many other aspects of motherhood, is simultaneously so difficult and so rewarding. By providing nourishment, we are literally providing life.
It's not an accident that the longest chapter in Crib Notes is about Breastfeeding. It covers medical and physical benefits, along with some how-to-do and how-to-cope. To say the book is an exact reflection of my experience would be untrue. But, moment for moment, breastfeeding was the longest part of my pregnancy/new motherhood life. For me, nursing lasted longer than pregnancy!
To those who have done it, or tried it even once-- Congrats! To those who are contemplating it-- I encourage you to try. And to those who did not-- that's ok, you surely provide food, and love, in many other ways...but you already know that. After all, Food is Love.
(Thanks for the inspiration and beautiful words, Mark.)
