If Rocks Could Sing is an alphabet storybook that was born out of author Leslie McGuirk’s beach findings over the years. Numbers and letters and shapes and emotions are represented by rocks in just those shapes. D is for dog, F is for footprint, and T is for toast, are some of my favorites!
This is a really fun, imaginative way for kids to practice their alphabet, as well as concepts. The J page had a picture of…fish. Wait, what? But they’re happy fish and they represent Joy! Because of more complex ideas like this one, I would say that Rocks is great for kindergarten through third grade.
As you head outside this summer—to the beach, the campground, or your own backyard—encourage your children to be on the lookout for items in nature that look like other things. You’ll be surprised what they find!

The shapes and figures of these rocks is uncanny! It is amazing that McGuirk was able to gather these rocks and match them so perfectly to the concept for each letter. Leslie McGuirk “is an internationally known author and illustrator of bestselling children’s books.”
