People are truly astonishing. I know a couple who spent a LOT of time and a LOT of money fighting to be a child's parents. I know this because they are close friends and we talked about the process a LOT, not because their was a price tag on the child's ear.
They also blow the 'you'll get pregnant as soon as you adopt' theory out of the water, not only because they did, but because they had many times before the decision to adopt as well. That's not always the incentive for adoption.
Neither is a bargain price-- so don't ask such insensitive and insignificant questions.
